How's your health?
How’s your health? - Nature walks, healthy cafes, hiking
If you are bound for the Gold Coast in search of some well-earned R&R, prepare to be indulged.
With fresh, coastal air, an abundance of great restaurants and an endless array of outdoor and wellbeing activities on offer, you are sure to be spoilt for choice.
Here are Oscar on Main’s top tips for a healthy Gold Coast getaway!
Get hiking
From the shoreline to the hinterland, the Gold Coast is certainly a hot spot for enjoyable hikes with breathtaking views.
Whether you are seeking a relaxing wander or an energetic climb, there is something on offer for every age and ability. Of course, the Gold Coast is home to countless casual, coastal paths with a water view. Gold Coast Broadwaterway offers 22 kilometres of pathways around the foreshores of the Gold Coast Broadwater, while Surfers Riverwalk consists of a nine kilometre network of pathways along the foreshores of the Nerang River and Little Tallebudgera Creek.
The family-friendly Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk offers a unique experience; taking you on a gentle journey through the rainforest canopies – some 40 metres about the ground over forest floor, creeks and local wildlife!
Those who are feeling more energetic may like to head for a volcanic mountain claim at Mount Mitchell. Hovering some 1,000m above sea level, the peak is still surprisingly accessible for most abilities.
Nourish your soul
Your tastebuds and tummy will be tantalised by the fresh fare served up at many of Main Beach’s cafes. Hot Shott and Local & Co deliver nutritious menus with plenty of flavour, and both celebrate the freshest local produce. Dine in or grab a meal on the run, but be sure to treat yourself to some of the best coffee on the Gold Coast (Hot Shott) and the tastiest share plates, superfood salads and smoothies in town (Local & Co). If cooking in is more you thing, take a visit to the Marina
Mirage Farmers Market and stock your Oscar on Main kitchen with the region’s finest produce.
Take a class
Renowned for their strengthening, toning, mind-clearing and relaxation enhancing abilities, there is no doubt that pilates and yoga have firmly established themselves as wellbeing masterclasses!
When you stay at Oscar on Main, a range of classes – from beginner to advanced – are available within easy walking distance. Located at Marina Mirage, Organic Pilates boasts a team of qualified, skilled instructors with a passion for quality, small, reformer-based classes. Your introductory session will include a postural assessment, core activation tips and instructions for using a reformer, so you can better understand your body and ensure maximum benefit. If a yoga mat and a downward dog is more your thing, then Yoga Gold Coast consistently receives five star reviews and is located in nearby Surfers Paradise.
Enjoy nature’s remedies
Why look any further than Mother Nature when you are in need of a boost?
Some of the best vitamins, minerals and experiences are available free of charge on the sandy shores of Main Beach. Ocean air contains a high number of negatively charged ions, which can help to cancel out the impact of electronic use and germ exposure. This improved air quality is the result of the energy generated through the falling and splashing of waves, and is the reason we are often overcome with an instinct to “take a deep breath” when we visit the beach. Walking barefoot in the sand - particularly damp or wet sand - is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways that we can reconnect (or “ground”) ourselves with nature and absorb earth’s electrical energy. Kicking off the shoes and wandering the shoreline also offers a fabulous, nerve simulating foot massage. Not only does the sunshine feel amazing on our skin … it actually feeds our bodies with vital nutrients. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is primarily created by our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight. In fact, 80 to 100 per cent of the vitamin D we need comes from the sun!
Enjoy 10 -45 minutes a day to improve metabolism, bone strength and organ function, and reduce your risk of cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and much more. Finally, bathing in the sea provides a hit of antibacterial and immunity-boosting vitamins, mineral salts, trace elements, amino acids and living microorganisms. Magnesium-rich seawater is also said to have muscle relaxing and seep-inducing abilities, while the sea’s high levels of iodine are great for hair, skin, nails and the thyroid.
